Fighting off the effects of a 3 hour bus trip which started at 6 am is a tough way to begin a lacrosse game but that is just what the 2011 Santa Clara Broncos needed to do.

Unfortunately, Chico State had other ideas and blitzed out to a 2-0 lead on two goals in the first 3 minutes of play.  SCU got one back on freshman AJ Von Massenhausen's goal off a feed from fellow freshman Scott Wheaton.  The teams then exchanged goals with Chico State taking a 3-2 lead at the first break.  The third Chico tally was costly with starting defenseman and captain Bennett DeLozier suffering a game ending injury on the play which seemed to trigger a pattern for thr Bronco back line today.

Santa Clara started to shake off the cobwebs in the second and jumped out to a 6-5 lead on goals from Brett Oliveira, Nick Breska, Joe O'Brien and Wheaton.  The third quarter was all Broncos.  SCU pumped in 4 more goals to take a commanding 10-6 lead at the end of three but it again was a costly frame.  Lost to injury was another starting defenseman, freshman AJ Doiron and the young Broncos had to shuffle some positions around to cover for the defensive losses.  Senior LSM, Spencer Jenkins (1g- 1a) moved to close defense along with senior Vytas Degesys while freshmen Andrew Borowick took over the LSM duties.

In the fourth, Chico was able to capitalize on the changes and when combned with another injury to Degesys and three Bronco penalties the Wildcats were able to score 3 more goals.  Staying strong in the goal for the fifth time this season was junior Luke Kantola who ended the day with 15 saves. The Broncos closed out their scoring just the way they began with Wheaton finding Von Massenhausen for a 11-9 final.  Also seeing important game time today were junior Mark Montalban who tried to contain a dominant Chico faceoff specialist and making his SCU debut was freshman Adam Oreglia who was asked to move from defensive midfield to close defense for the remainder of the season.

The Broncos continue WCLL play next weekend when they host the Mustangs from Cal Poly at 11 am on Bellomy Field.
