The 2011 lacrosse campaign opens for the young Santa Clara Broncos at 1PM at the Lower East Field on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.  The Banana Slugs already have 2 games under their belts while the Broncos come off an overtime loss last weekend to Dominican University (NCAA Div II) 7-6 in a shortened scrimmage.

The Broncos return 4 seniors and 8 juniors to lead this young squad of 31.  SCU looks to improve on their 2010 record of 6-5 with a more balanced offense lead by Sophomore Attackmen Brett Oliveira and Kevin Fitzsimons and junior Midfielders Jason Travis, Joe O'Brien and captain Alex Miller. SCU welcomes a large group of freshman midfielders including 2 local Nor Cal boys, AJ Von Massenhausen from Bellarmine Prep and HS All American Robby Inch from Piedmont HS.  Joining the squad from the Massachusetts are face off specialist Scott Fronsdahl and Alex Walkingshaw.  Between the lines, the defensive midfield unit is strong this year. Senior captain LSM Spencer Jenkins, senior DM Brad Lees and freshman DM Dan Bohnert will prove a formidable force in transition.  On the backline, junior captain Matt Baker anchors a defensive unit which includes junior captain Bennett DeLozier who makes the switch to the long pole after playing defensive midfield the past two seasons.  Between the pipes are junior keeper, Luke Kantola and freshman stopper Aaron Walls.

Returning to lead the Broncos are co-head coaches Sean Keenan and Gary Podesta.  Joining the staff in 2011 are John Walsh, assistant coach at Scotts Valley HS and Athletic trainer Alex Margarito.

The Broncos open their home season on Sunday, Feb 13 at 1 PM against the Oregon Ducks who are slated to be top 10 team in the MCLA Division 1.
