# 25 Santa Clara opened WCLL Div 1 conference play today taking on the MCLA # 11 Sonoma Seawolves at Foothill HS in Pleasanton.  SCU went down early when SSU midfielder Jordan Ambler buried the first of his 7 goals on the day to give Sonoma a 1-0 lead.  The Broncos answered back quickly and kept on scoring to end the first quarter with a 6-2 lead.  In the second quarter, SCU extended the lead to 9-2 but then after changing goalkeepers and defensive strategy, Sonoma began a gradual comeback behind Ambler (7G, 2A) and eventually tied the game at 11-11 with 12 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.  After trading goals, SSU went up two with 6:30 left in the game.  Jr. midfielder Jonathan Fallers (4-0)  scored the next two goals to knot the score again at 14-14 with 2:27 remaining.  SSU won the next faceoff and scored the game winner with 1:20 left. Sr. midfielder Mark Swoboda (4-1) won the last faceoff of the game, his 20th of 27attempts for the day, and drew another Sonoma penalty with under a minute to go.  The Broncos were unable to conver the extra man opportunity and Sonoma was able to run out the clock.  Freshman defenseman, Matthew Baker played an excellent game shutting off Sonoma's captain and primary offensive player, limiting him to 1 goal and 4 total shots for the day.
