Broncos Improve to 3-1 After MudfestFeb. 23, 2009 Despite horrible conditions on Bellomy field, Santa Clara improved their record to 3-1 with a decisive win over the WCC rival San Diego Torreros. SCU opened the scoring when Sr. Midfielder Mark Swoboda (2g, 0A) put away the first of Sr. Attackman Liam Byrne 6 assists (0-6). Byrne also connected with Jr. Attackman Charlie Ellis (5-3) 3 times in the quarter which ended with a 4-2 Bronco lead. Santa Clara kept the pressure on for the rest of the game, unleashing 55 total shots at the Torrero cage and an excellent job by the goaltender (20 saves) kept the game close. The Broncos return to action on Saturday 2-27 when they host the Mustangs from Cal Poly at 7 pm in an early, crucial WCLL Division 1 conference game.
