Broncos Cruise in Season OpenerFeb. 12, 2009 Santa Clara opened the 2009 season with a road trip to Los Angeles. Their first opponent, Biola University, is the former 2009 WCLL Division 2 Champion. This season, Biola is part of the newly formed Southwestern Lacrosse League (SLC). SCU got on the scoreboard first when Jr. attackman Charlie Ellis (5 goals, 2 assists) converted on a feed from Sr. linemate Liam Byrne (2-2). 14 seconds later, Ellis notched his second when Sr. midfielder Mark Swoboda (2-3) found Ellis off the faceoff win. The Broncos opened the game up with two more first period goals by Bryne and Ellis for a 4-0 lead. In the second frame, Biola scored first when they converted their on an extraman opportunity. The SCU man down unit held the rest of the way, despite being down 9 more times during the game. SCU got goals from newcomers, Fr attackman Dylan Panzarella (3-3) and Jonathan Fallers (1-0) to extend the halftime lead to 7-1. Byrne opened the third quarter with his second goal of the contest followed by tallies from Swoboda, Ellis and Panzarella. The quarter ended with a 11-2 SCU lead. Freshman attackman Andrew Peterson (1-0) and sophomore attackman Michael Podesta (1-0) notched goals in the fourth for a 15-3 final. Santa Clara ended their southern swing the next day with a game against SLC Division 1, University of Southern California.
