On a muddy field and battling a noisy tractor pull next door, Santa Clara overcame a sluggish, sloppy start to make a dramatic second half comeback to beat the Cal Poly Mustangs 10-9 and capture a WCLL playoff spot.

Both teams found it hard to generate any offense in the first quarter; with many turnovers and tough defense. Cal Poly notched the only goal with 51 seconds to go in the quarter.  The Mustangs started to put it together in the second while the Broncos continued to struggle offensively.  Cal Poly jumped out to a 4-0 lead before SCU finally got on the scoreboard with :05 on the clock.

Lady momentum started to change her tune in the second half.  SCU scored quickly in the third when sophomore Charlie Ellis (1 goal, 2 assists) converted a feed from junior, Mark Swoboda (0-2) to close the gap to 2 goals.  The teams traded goals the rest of the quarter with the Broncos closing the gap to 4-6 at the end of three.

Santa Clara owned the fourth quarter scoring five of the next six goals to take a 9-7 lead with 3 minutes left in the game.  After Cal Poly scored to pull within one, senior Matthew Paver (1-2) converted a feed from Swoboda for the game winner.

Santa Clara returns to the playoff scene for the first time in 4 years.  Next up for Santa Clara is a rematch with the # 8 Sonoma State Seawolves on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 PM in Rohnert Park.
