Broncos Lose CLose One to Division Rival

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 9, 2008

On a beautiful day in Palo Alto, Santa Clara took on the Stanford Cardinal in a game likely to decide a WCLL Central Division playoff spot.  The Broncos jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Charlie Ellis found the back of the net on a feed from junior Mark Swoboda .  Stanford knotted the score at one on a controversial stick check call with 49 seconds left in the quarter. In the second quarter the teams traded goals and ended tied at 5-5 at the half.  Stanford jumped out to a 2 goal lead in the third before got one back on Swoboda's second goal of the game.  The defense couldn’t hold Stanford as they pushed the lead to 9-7 at the end of the third.  Santa Clara got to within one early in the fourth when freshman Nick Devich converted on an extra man opportunity off a feed from defenseman Caspian Alderman .  Unfortunately, the Cardinal held strong and the Broncos weren't able to capitalize on their fourth quarter opportunities.

Junior net minder Phil Donnici kept the Broncos in the game the entire day making 17 saves throughout the contest.

The Broncos complete their 2008 home season with the Rivalry Series game against crosstown rival San Jose State this Saturday at 2 PM.
