Santa Clara Defeats Bears 12-6Mar. 1, 2008 'Friday Night Lights'- Santa Clara took on the University of California Golden Bears in the first night club game at Bellomy Field. Before a crowd of 600 rowdy fans, the Broncos defeated Cal 12-6 in an important WCLL Central Division game. Santa Clara led 6-4 at half and shut the Bears out in the third quarter while scoring five unanswered goals in the second half before Cal added two close to the end of the game. The entire defense, led by junior goalie Phil Donnici (10 saves, 6 goals allowed) played an inspired game to limit the Bears scoring opportunities all night. Offensive leaders for Santa Clara were sophomore attackman Charlie Ellis (3 goals, 2 assists), senior midfielder Mark Swoboda (2-1) and senior defensive midfielder Tomas Marquez (2 goals). Santa Clara now sits on top of the WCLL Central Division standings with a 2-0 record. Their next Divisional game is on Saturday, March 8 at Stanford at 1:00 PM.
