  SBCC Post Game

San Luis Obispo, CA - The Vaqueros made the short drive up Highway 101 to play at Cal Poly SLO B in a WWLL Central D2 game and won 12-5. SBCC claimed sole possession of first place in the Central Region in California with the victory. Prior to the game SBCC and the Mustangs were tied at the top of the standings. At game time the Vaqueros were ranked 5th nationally in the USA Lacrosse WCLA D2 Poll and Cal Poly were ranked 15th.

"This was the toughest defense against us so far this season," said coach Paul Ramsey after the game, "and while we weren't always clean in transition because of it our effort level carried us through to the win."

SBCC outshot the Mustangs 20 to 9 and converted on 12 of 20 to shoot 60%. Cal Poly goalie Grace Galy (San Jose, CA) had 8 saves. It were the most saves by a goalie while facing the Vaqueros offense all season. Her play outside the crease resulted in an interception of an almost assist by SBCC.

In the face of the Cal Poly defense SBCC made the most of the chances they were getting when they were on offense and their high shooting percentage facing good goal keeping kept the game from being closer. Freshman Kiara Koefed (Orinda, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals on 7 shots and had 1 assist. The midfielder also racked up 6 draw controls, 2 caused turnovers and 2 ground balls. Sophomore Sabrina Forbes (Santa Clarita, CA) had 3 goals, 1 assist and 2 draw controls.

Sophomore goalie Tatum Davis had 3 saves for SBCC and also had 2 ground balls and a caused turnover when she intercepted an errant Mustangs pass. Freshman defender Yesenia Valdez (Goleta, CA) had a career high 6 ground balls and an interception.

SBCC improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in WWLL Central. They are another step closer to their goal of qualifying for the state championships. The WWLL is hosting that tournament in La Jolla April 15 & 16 at UC San Diego. The Vaqueros next have a non-region game with Fullerton CC in SBCC La Playa Stadium on March 15th at 7:00pm. Then after spring break, looming large will be a game at UCLA B on April 8th for their final WWLL Central D2 game. Barring any suprises it will determine if they get an automatic qualifer spot in the state tournament.
