Playoffs!!!

The Oklahoma Sooners lacrosse team finished their regular season over the weekend, facing off against the Kansas Jayhawks on the road and the North Texas Mean Green at home.

Saturday’s game against the Jayhawks was intended to be a quality warm up for the Sooners’ season finale, but the matchup proved to be too much for the outnumbered Sooners. Oklahoma was outplayed in many aspects of the game, especially transition play, en route to an 18-5 loss. After a long bus ride at the end of a long day, the team would have to refocus themselves in order to finish the regular season like they had started it months ago with a crucial win over a division opponent.

It was the season finale, and by warm-ups, the Sooners team was excited and ready to put the previous day behind them and play a solid game in front of a good crowd, which was in store for a thrilling game. Effective defense and extended offensive possessions allowed for the Sooners to finish the first quarter with a 2-1 lead. The second quarter saw many more goals by both teams, and Oklahoma entered the half with a slim 6-5 lead. At the end of a second half with both teams trading goals and multiple lead changes, North Texas scored in the final minutes to bring the game into overtime tied at 13-13.

The Mean Green won the opening faceoff of the overtime period and held possession with the help of calls going against the Sooners. Four defensive series later, Oklahoma’s defense cleared the ball to the offensive end, and Coach Purcell used a timeout to set up one final play. In the first possession, freshman Tom Barnhart took advantage of a mismatch and put in the winning goal (shown above), giving the Sooners an exciting 14-13 overtime victory!

Freshman Nick Schuler led all scorers with two goals and four assists, and goalie Sean Lefton had a season high 33 saves to ensure the win. This victory puts the Oklahoma Sooners into the LSA playoffs for the first time in the program’s history.

They will prepare for a rematch with the North Texas Mean Green to be played at 6pm on Saturday April 16 at Keller Central High School.
