OU Defeated by SHSU in Close Finish in Huntsville, TXFeb. 21, 2010 This past Sunday, the Sooners took the field against the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The team opened the season last spring by beating Sam Houston State 19-8, but these Bearkats were unlike any previous squad the Sooners had ever faced; the day before the game, they defeated Baylor, a Division I program, by one goal. Oklahoma jumped to a 2-0 lead, but with yesterday’s news, they knew the game would not be business as usual. The Sooners traded goals with the Bearkats and entered the half tied at 5-5 after allowing a goal in the final minute. The team played a hard fought game with a valiant effort never more apparent than in the back to back man-down situations in the second half. Coach Alex Perry’s defense played two men short twice and did not allow a goal in either instance. Both sides continued to trade goals, but the Sooners came up just short, falling to the Bearkats by a final score of 10-9. Freshman Pete Kitsos led the Sooners in scoring with a hat trick and one assist. The Sooners next game is against the SMU Mustangs in Dallas, TX. SMU, a perennial LSA power, is the first opponent for the Sooners in the tough LSA North Division. After showing visible improvement as the season continues, the Oklahoma team will look to make a strong statement against the Mustangs and establish strong momentum heading into divisional play.
