Last weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners lacrosse team opened the spring season by traveling to Conway, Arkansas to play a scrimmage game against the Hendrix College Warriors, a Division III member of the NCAA. This was an important milestone for the Sooners as Hendrix College was the first NCAA opponent for the revived program.

First game nerves were apparent as the Warriors scored a man-up goal within the first minute and quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Sooners responded with a three goal run. Both sides traded goals with the Warriors leading 5-4 at the half. However, through a combination of fatigue and effective adjustments by Hendrix, the Sooners played a rough third quarter, giving up quick goals in fast break and man-up situations. With Coach Purcell’s urge to “win the fourth quarter” in mind, Oklahoma regained control of the game. Though they did not win the quarter, the Sooners were able to halt the Warriors’ assault and finish with a humbling but more respectable score of Hendrix - 12, Oklahoma - 7.

Oklahoma opens LSA conference play this weekend when they travel to Houston, TX to play Rice and Sam Houston State, two teams not to be taken lightly. The Owls are a fellow Division I program, and the Bearkats are coming off of a trip to the Division II playoffs last season.
