Kilbourne Roundup: Boys Lacrosse Team Looking to "Grow Up"

The Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse team is looking for more magic after winning the Division II state championship last year.

The Wolves went 8-10 in the regular season a year ago against the third-toughest schedule in the state regardless of division, according to laxpower.com. They then won six consecutive tournament games to capture their second state title, defeating Toledo St. Francis 11-7 in the championship game to finish 14-10 overall.

“We only have five seniors this season,” eighth-year coach Drew May said. “We are a young team that will need to incrementally improve each day in practice. We will need to grow up and mature in a hurry in order to compete.”

Among the 2016 graduates were Chris Reynolds, who was named state Goalkeeper of the Year, and two other first-team all-state performers in attacker Luke LeVette and midfielder Jared Happ as well as a second-team all-state honoree in long-stick midfielder Alex Cash.

The Wolves opened March 18 by beating Watterson 9-8 in overtime but are 1-3 overall after losing to Dublin Coffman 14-9 on March 22, Toledo St. Francis 7-6 on March 30 and Cincinnati Moeller 4-3 on April 1.

Kilbourne went 3-4 in the OCC-Buckeye Division last season to finish fifth behind champion Upper Arlington (7-0), but has moved to the OCC-Cardinal this year. The Wolves open league play Thursday, April 6, at home against Hilliard Darby.

Seniors Curt Grawe and Jack Trombetti are expected to lead the defense this season in front of sophomore goalie Dane Jackson, who started most of last season while Reynolds was sidelined with a knee injury. Trombetti was named second-team all-state, first-team all-region and second-team all-league, Grawe was second-team all-region and Jackson was honorable mention all-region.

Junior Nick Clay and sophomore Jake LeVette should lead the attack and juniors Sam Biglin and Ryan Wesolowski are expected to be leaders in the midfield, while junior Marino Gasbarro and sophomore Aidan Cameron should be key contributors in the attack or midfield.

Against Watterson, Clay had five goals and Wesolowski had two as Kilbourne scored three times in the final three minutes to force overtime. LeVette had four goals against Coffman.
