Roxboro Sneaks By Webb in OvertimeMay. 1, 2013 RAGLAND ENDS CAREER WITH CAREER NIGHT (3G 1A) With a play-off spot on the line and Webb needing a win to get it, the host Bulldogs ended the Warriors' post season hopes with an overtime goal to snap a three game losing streak to the Warriors Tuesday night. It was the season finale for both teams, and a heart breaking loss for a group of Webb seniors who, for the second year in a row, found themselves one goal and one game short of a play-off spot for the first time in school history. The first quarter lacked much excitment, with freshman Ben Branch netting the game's opener off an assist from Jacob Ragland. The second quarter started much of the same way, as Brock Fuller found the netting to give Webb a 2-0 lead. A quick flurry of Roxboro goals, though, knotted the score back up at 2-2 heading into the locker room. Both teams defenses played exceptional, with both goalies making doorstep saves to keep their teams in it. Ragland scored his first goal of the game in the third quarter, before RCS rattled off three straight to take a 5-3 lead. Luke Wheeless's first career goal, a ground ball in the defensive end-turned full field sprint and finish, at the beginning of the fourth cut the lead to one before RCS scored to push it back to two. With a man-up play halfway through the last quarter, Ragland literally ran over a defender and fired a shot home to cut the lead to one. Just minutes later, Ragland again refused to be denied. receiving a pass from JV call up Dallas Daniel and finding the net to even the score at 6-6. In overtime, though, RCS managed to find the net after a hectic few minutes, ending the post season hopes of Webb and winning the game 7-6 in front of their home crowd. Ragland led the way for Webb with four points, while Rufus Terry grabbed 12 ground balls and caused five turnovers. Wheeless added 10 ground balls, and Cedric Spence, Joseph Toto, Zach Watkins and Christian Tilley all caused two turnovers each. In cage, Tilley finished his career with 10 saves, and Cam Blanchard won 11 of 17 to keep the Warriors in contention for the win. The game ends both team's seasons, with Webb finishing 8-8 (3-5 Conf-4) and Roxboro finishing 6-8 (3-5 Conf-4), both teams tying for third place in the conference. Game Notes: It was Roxboro's first win over Webb since 2011...Daniel's call up was the first JV call up all season...His assist is the first Varsity point of his career...Without a point tonight, Terry's point scoring streak ends at 16 games...Even with the loss, Webb has a .500 record (8-8) for the first time in school history...It is the second time in three years the Warriors and Bulldogs have tied for a place in conference (2011: teams tied for fourth).
