PIRATES TAKE 8-3 HALFTIME LEAD

Using two different five goal bursts, the Riverside High School Pirates jumped first to a 5-3 first quarter lead, then an 8-3 halftime lead before putting it on cruise control and coasting to a 10-4 conference victory Friday night at Warrior Field.  It was the first meeting of the year for the two teams, and the 7th all time.

Webb got on the board first with an unassisted rocket by junior Brock Fuller to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.  Riverside answered with five straight, though, to take a commanding 5-1 lead.  Senior attacker Antonio Jones scored twice before the end of the quarter, the first off a feed from classmate Rufus Terry, and the second an unassisted cannon of a shot from range on a man-up play.

In the second and third quarters, Riverside used another five goal run to take a 10-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  With time winding down, freshman Ben Branch took a feed from senior Teddy Anderson and found the twine for his third goal of the year, the most ever by a freshman.  This would prove to be the final score on the night, as Riverside got on the bus for Durham with a win under their belt.

Defensively, Cedric Spence led the team with four caused turnovers while also collecting four ground balls, while Terry led all players with 9 ground balls.  At the face-off X, junior Cam Blanchard went 6-18 on the night, while senior Christian Tilley made 13 saves after a slow start to the game in net.

In the JV game, the Warriors JV fought the Pirates to a 7-5 loss.  Dallas Daniel scored three goals and added an assist, while Bruce Clay added two goals of his own.

Webb falls to 3-3 (0-2 Conf-4) on the year, while the Pirates improved to 4-1 (1-0 Conf-4).  Webb next faces-off against Roxboro Community School on Tuesday the 26th, while Riverside also faces Jordan the same night.  Both games are at each team's respective home field.

Game Notes: Four goals scored is second most in the all time series between these two schools for Webb...10 goals allowed ties for the fewest allowed as well...Terry is the only player to score at least one point in every game this year...Anderson's assist ties him for the team lead with Fuller (five).
