More Experienced Falcons WinMar. 31, 2010 First Time Offense Shut Out on the Year The Webb Warriors traveled to Durham Jordan High School Tuesday night and left as witnesses to a clinic. The Falcons posted an impressive offensive and defensive showing, as they rolled to a 19-0 victory over the Black and Red. The victory improves Jordan to 6-3 on the season, 4-0 in conference play, while Webb falls to 2-5 (0-3). The offense was able to get shots on goal, but the Jordan defense, lead by senior goalie Ben Plesser, either forced the shots wide or stopped them in the event they were on cage. On the defensive end of the field, close defenders Tyler Eller, Zach Barnes, and Holden Jones were able to keep the Jordan attack, most notably senior Tony Mangili (who, under Eller’s guard, only managed 4 goals, a strong defensive showing considering the player’s skill) and sophomore Sam Lindsey, who was guarded admirably by Barnes, in check for the majority of the game; it was when the poles had to slide away to cover a defense assignment broken by the Falcons’ speed that the Jordan offense cruised to the net. Rufus Terry continued to make a name for himself as a long stick midfielder, forcing the Falcons to use skill instead of speed to beat the talented freshman, while also assisting later in the game in locking off Lindsey and allowing the talented sophomore to score only twice while being marked. Prior to this assignment, he spent the night guarding attacker Eric Carver, making the task of goal scoring as difficult as possible for the junior. In goal, freshman Christian Tilley continued his impressive season with another career high tying 20 save performance while only surrendering 17 goals (a very impressive feat considering most shots came from the crease), and sophomore Larry Hester continued to prove a capable back-up, relieving Tilley midway through the 4th quarter and only allowing 2 goals while making 4 saves. Coach Farabee had this to say following the game: “Tonight our players learned why Jordan is one of the finest lacrosse programs in this area. Jordan played with a technical ability and intelligence that clearly impressed our players. Our players have also been given a good model of what they can work to become. Again, despite the score, our team played well tonight, especially on defense. Our marking is becoming more solid, and players are starting to communicate more effectively. We just have to continue to work to narrow the gap between our play and that of more established programs.” The Warriors take the field again tonight for the second of three straight games, facing Durham Riverside High School at the Webb football stadium, while Jordan has a day’s rest before traveling to Webb Thursday for their second meeting in three days. Game time for that game is 5:30 pm.
