Knott, Gillespie Each Get Goals

The Black and Red succumbed to a superior effort from Roxboro Community School, falling 8-2 to the Bulldogs at Stories Creek Elementary School.   The match was the first for both teams in conference, as Roxboro moves to 1-1 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 2-2.  The Warriors got goals on the night from Matt Knott and Gibson Gillespie, both receiving an assist from Matt Roach.  All three players have scored at least one point in every game this season, with Roach leading the team in assists (9)  and total points (11), while Knott and Gillespie are tied for the lead in goals (6).  Besides these two goals, however, the Warriors couldn’t get a thing going on offense on the night, turning the ball over and committing a multitude of penalties when they did.

Defensively, the Warriors were not on their game either.  The unit, usually very stout and steady, allowed 8 goals on the night, tied for their most allowed on the year.  In goal, Christian Tilley continued his impressive start to the season, making 13 saves, several on players on the doorstep.  Despite the lapses in defensive play, Rufus Terry, Tyler Eller, Holden Jones, and Zach Barnes worked hard to keep the score and shot total to a respectable low number.

“Although the outcome of tonight’s game against Roxboro Community School was disappointing in the score (8-2 loss), it’s important to keep our efforts this season in perspective.  We have played remarkably well for a first year program, and tonight was simply another opportunity for a young to team to learn how to play lacrosse.  I am always proud of our effort and intensity; it is clear, however, that we must continue to do the little things to improve:  throw, catch, not ball watch on defense, communicate, etc.  As I mentioned to our team, if we fail to learn from tonight’s game, then it really is a loss.  It was great to have so many parents and friends out to the game in Roxboro.  The support is always needed and appreciated.  We now have to put this game behind us, and get ready for Orange high school tomorrow night, 6:00 p.m., at Orange high school.   Hope to see many of you there.”
