Warriors Conclude Season at Eastern Alamance; Final Statistics Posted

The Black and Red of Webb High School fell to the home Eastern Alamance Eagles on Wednesday, April 13th, 17-9.  The match was the season finale for Webb, as its Friday the 15th game against Jordan could not be played due to lack of player numbers (game was a rescheduled contest from earlier in the year but many players had already planned to be out of town).

The Eagles got the scoring started early, getting an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Joey Stump at 10:43 of the first quarter.  Eastern would score again with 6:35 to go as Wes Hunt got the first of his three goals from an alley dodge that beat junior netminder Larry Hester on the outside pipe.  Hester started in place of sophomore Christian Tilley, who suffered an injury the previous night against Northern Durham, and played outstanding, making 20 saves on the night in his first start of the year in goal.

Senior attacker Jesse Hogg, who scored a game high 5 goals for the Eagles, got an unassisted goal just 11 seconds later, before senior attacker Matt Knott was able to cut the lead to 2 at 5:10 of the first.  However, Eastern got three more goals to close out the quarter, one from Hunt on a Hogg assist, one from senior middie Nathan Dunkerton, and a second goal from Hogg, closing the first quarter with Eastern up 6-1.

The second quarter was all Webb, as the Warriors offense came to life and out scored Eastern 4-2.  For the Eagles, Dunkerton got his second goal of the evening to put EAHS up 7-1 before junior captain Matt Roach got the scoring started for Webb with an unassisted dodge at 8:03.  Sophomore LSM Rufus Terry would score on a run up field from the defensive half to cut the lead down to 7-3.  Just 30 seconds later, Knott took a feed from sophomore Jacob Ragland and buried it past senior goalie Seth Williams, who made 8 saves while getting the win for Eastern.  The Eagles would get on more goal from Dunkerton immediately after Terry would get his second of three on the night, closing the scoring for the first half at 8-5 Eastern.

The third quarter was again all Eastern, as the Eagles got five more goals to Webb’s one, a Knott assisted goal from “the Bulldozer.”  In the fourth quarter, Webb would get three more goals to Eastern’s four: one run off the face-off from Terry which elicited the responses of “Penalty flag: that was dirty” from several members of the sideline, one unassisted from Williams again, and a third goal from Knott on an assist from Terry.  The final score for the game was 17-9 Eastern.

Leading the Eagles in scoring was Hogg, with 5 goals and 1 assist.  Hunt and Dunkerton each added a hat trick apiece, while Stump led in ground balls with 11.  For Webb, Knott led the way with 5 points (3 G 2 A), and Terry added the first hat trick of his career along with one helper for 4 points.  Williams, Terry, and sophomore defender Holden Jones each had 6 ground balls for the Warriors.  Webb finishes its season 2-12 (1-7 Conf. 4), while Eastern improves to 7-8 and faces Conference 6 opponent Northern Guilford on Friday.

Game Notes: Larry Hester got his first career start in goal for the Warriors tonight…Hester is only the second goalie to start in cage for the Warriors, with Tilley having started the previous 26 games…Two freshmen started for Webb tonight:  close defender Zach Watkins, who had 2 ground balls in the contest, and face-off specialist Cameron Blanchard (in the place of Hester who was in goal), who won 12-28 face-offs in his first game on Varsity.

Webb Loses Heartbreaker on Senior Night to Northern Durham

It took a rain delay and a 5-2 deficit to ignite the fighting spirit in the Warriors Tuesday night.  After falling 5-2 in the first quarter, the game was delayed for weather shortly.  When the teams took the field to play, Webb had awoken but it would not be able to pull out a win, falling 18-12 against the Knights on Senior Night (pictures by Vanessa Lewis may be found here).

Northern got the scoring started barely into the first minute of the game, as sophomore middie Jeremiah Humphrey drove down the left alley and powered a shot past fellow classmate goalie Christian Tilley for the first goal of the game.   Lees-McRae bound senior attacker Jon Williams would score twice to make it 3-0 Knights with almost 8 minutes left in the game.  Northern would get two more goals, one from junior midfielder Rafael Cuddahee and one from senior attacker Dane Haithcock, while Webb would get two goals from senior Matt Knott, one unassisted and one off of a Rufus Terry helper.  The first quarter ended with a score of 5-2 in favor of the Knights.

A rain delay took effect after lightning was spotted, halting the game for half an hour.  When the two teams took the field again, it was all Webb.  The defensive trio of seniors Zach Barnes and Tyler Eller, and sophomore Holden Jones would shut down the Northern attackers, allowing them just two goals, both coming in the last minute and a half of the quarter.  Before this could happen,  the Warriors rattled off 6 unanswered goals, starting with one from sophomore middie Jacob Ragland and then coming from Matt Roach, Landon Williams from a second Terry assist, a goal from Terry as well, a second Terry assisted Williams goal, and ending with senior attacker Gibson Gillespie, receiving an assist from Teddy Anderson.  Northern would get their two goals before the half ended from seniors Mike Rice and Haithcock.  The two teams hit halftime with Webb leading 8-7.

The second half started slow, but Northern evened up the score at 9:31 as Williams would take a feed from Haithcock and rifle it home for the 8-8 tie.  Not even two minutes later, Haithcock took it unassisted himself to give the Knights a 9-8 lead.  The Warriors would get two goals as Northern got 4 more before tragedy would strike the Warriors.  With 2 minutes to go in the quarter, Christian Tilley would make a save and chase the rebound behind the goal.  As he did, a Northern attacker would lay a devastating cross check to the young netminder, ending his time in the game and season at the same time.  Serving a 2 minute non releasable penalty, the Knights allowed the final two goals of the night to Webb, one from Knott on a Williams assist, and another from Williams on an Anderson assist.  Larry Hester, normally the Webb face-off specialist, moonlights as the back up goalie for Varsity and did as such, filling in for the injured Tilley.

In the 4th quarter, it was all Northern.  The Knights fired off 5 goals, with Williams leading the way with two of them.  The final horn sounded with the Knights up 18-12.  Webb was lead offensively by seniors Matt Knott (3 G) and Landon “Bulldozer” Williams (3 G 1 A).  Defensively, the Warriors got a school record 15 ground balls from Rufus Terry, and Eller, Barnes, and Jones would collect 6 ground balls and cause 2 turnovers between the three of them.  Hester went 14-26 at the face-off X, with Terry taking the last quarter’s draws and going 4-6.  The Knights move to 5-4, 3-3 in conference play, while Webb falls to 2-10 (1-7 Conference-4).

Game Notes: Northern is 4-0 all time against the Warriors…Webb’s 12 goals is the second most in a game in school history, only surpassed by the 14 scored against Roxboro earlier this year…Terry’s 15 ground balls breaks his old school record set against W.M. Williams High School (13)…Starting the game for Webb, in addition to the three starting senior attackers and two starting senior defenders, were senior defender Jacob Goss, and senior defensive midfielders Will Huffaker and Kevin Fields.

Game Recaps Here for Northern Durham Away to Roxboro Community Away

The Warriors faced a tough 4 game road stretch, falling all four times to Northern Durham, Riverside, Jordan, and RCS.

Several game recaps may be found in this story.  First, the Warriors traveled to Northern Durham on March 25th and fell 10-4.  The Knights of Northern took a 4-1 lead into half time and never looked back.  For Webb, ‘Bulldozer Williams had 4 goals, getting assists from fellow senior attacker Gibson Gillespie, and midfielders Matt Roach (Jr) and Garrett Yager (So).  Defensively, Rufus Terry led the team with 11 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers, while the cousins, Zach Barnes and Holden Jones, were able to lock off Northern star attackers Jon Williams and Mike Rice for the majority of the game.  Larry Hester won 10-17 face-offs, and Christian Tilley had 22 saves.

Box Score

Next, Webb traveled to Durham Riverside HS.  The Warriors defense was the story of the game, as it held the potent Riverside offense to 1 goal in the first quarter of play.  The Warriors would surrender 12 more, though, as senior RHS attacker Brad Hinkle would score a school record 8 goals against the Warriors.  For Webb, senior Matt Knott led the way with 2 goals, while Landon Williams got a goal and an assist.  Sophomore midfielder Mack Lyon added an assist.

Box Score

At Jordan, Webb came out flat and fell behind 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.  For the next three quarters, the Warriors woke up and lost by a score of 10-6, falling ultimately 19-6 at Jordan High School.  Landon Williams had a hat trick on the evening, while Matt Knott (2 G) and Rufus Terry (1 G 1 A) each had two points, with Matt Roach adding an assist as well.

Box Score

At Roxboro, the Warriors fell behind 5-3 going into half time.  In the second half, after a scoreless third quarter for both teams, Webb scored two goals to make it 6-5.  The Bulldogs, however, were able to ultimately pull away and secure the win with 3 more goals, winning 8-5 at RCS.  For Webb, Landon Williams had 2 goals, while Teddy Anderson, Jacob Ragland, and Matt Roach all added goals.

Warriors Cruise to 14-3 Win over Roxboro

The Warriors of JF Webb dominated all aspects of the game Tuesday night, getting 7 goals from senior attacker Landon Williams, allowing a school record tying 3 goals, and winning 15 of 21 face-offs to coast to a 14-3 victory over the Bulldogs of Roxboro Community School.  The Warriors won their second game in as many days and improve to 2-5 (1-1), while Roxboro falls to 3-2 (0-1) (highlights by Vanessa Lewis may be found here and photos may be found here).

The game started off shaky for Webb, as Roxboro got a quick goal just 27 seconds into the game as attacker Mike Zizzi took the ball to the rack and made it 1-0 Bulldogs.  The defense settled down though, holding Roxboro for 11 minutes and 19 seconds until late in the first quarter midfielder Ben Barr took a pass from fellow linemate Ryan Hutchins for a second goal.  In between that time, the Warriors offense was on fire, getting 5 goals in the first quarter.  Matt Roach got the scoring off as he took a pass from sophomore midfielder Teddy Anderson and fired a shot into the cage to tie the score 1-1 just 37 seconds later.  With 6:19 to go in the quarter, sophomore attacker Jordan Mallard picked up a loose ball to the left of the RCS goal and drove hard to the cage before burying it in the back of the net, getting his first career goal and giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead.  40 seconds later, Anderson got his second assist of the night, this time to ‘Dozer Williams for the first of his school record 7 goals.  The Black and Red would get two more goals, a Garrett Yager assisted strike from senior captain Matt Knott, and an unassisted dodge from Roach to end the first quarter 5-2.

The Bulldogs got their third and final goal early in the second quarter on a 6 on 4 penalty advantage, as Barr launched a shot past Christian Tilley for the Bulldogs’ third and final goal of the evening.  This was the closest that Roxboro would get, and the Warriors defense shut the Bulldogs down for the next 34:46 of the game.  In the second quarter, Webb got three goals from Williams, one unassisted, and the other two assisted on by Knott and defender Holden Jones.  The Warriors closed out the first half with an 8-3 lead.

In the second half, it was again all Webb, as the offense kept up its dominating performance, netting 5 goals in the third quarter while the defense allowed none.  Webb’s first two goals came from Williams again, one assisted by Knott and the other by senior attacker Gibson Gillespie.  At 3:39 to go in the quarter, Anderson would score his first career goal off of Yager’s second assist on the evening to give the Warriors an 11-3 lead.  With 49.1 seconds left in the quarter, sophomore LSM Rufus Terry took the ball the length of the field and netted his first goal of the evening, and just seconds later Williams again scored off of a Knott assist to give the Warriors a 13-3 lead going into the final stanza.

Perhaps one of the most exciting plays of the year lit up the stands and Warriors bench  in the 4th quarter.  First year senior defender Jacob Goss picked up a ground ball behind the Warrior goal, and proceeded to rumble the entire length of the field, running over Bulldogs right and left and leaving a trail of players and equipment behind him.  Upon reaching the offensive half of the field, he got the ball to Gillespie somehow, and Gillespie found the back of the net for the senior attacker’s first goal of the season and for the first year defender’s first career point.  This would prove to be the final tally, as Webb finished the game with a 14-3 victory.

Christian Tilley made 21 saves for Webb, while Larry Hester won 15 of 21 face-offs.  The ground ball king of the game was Holden Jones, who got 8, while the team combined for 60 ground balls in the contest.  The Warriors improve to 2-5 and 1-1 in conference play, with tonight’s win being the first conference victory in team history.  Roxboro falls to 3-2, 0-1 in conference.  Webb has until Friday before taking the field again, when it travels to conference foe Northern Durham.  Roxboro next plays tomorrow night against Orange, a team Webb defeated yesterday 9-6.

The Warriors won their second game in as many days and improve to 2-5 (1-1), while Roxboro falls to 3-2 (0-1).

Quick Notes: Tonights allowed goals are the fewest all year, and tie the school record set last year against Northwood for fewest allowed in a game…Landon Williams’ 3rd goal of the evening put the Warriors total goal scoring above last years’ total (33), with 9 games remaining in the season…7 different players scored tonight, with 4 players getting their first career goal or assist (or both) tonight.

Warriors Get Huge First Half and Victory against Orange

The Warriors used a great first half on both sides of the ball to earn its first victory of the season, 9-6, over the visiting Orange High School Panthers Monday night at Warrior Field.  It was sweet revenge for the Warriors, who fell 6-2 in their first meeting with the Panthers on March 4th, their second game of the season (pictures by Vanessa Lewis may be found here).

The Warriors started the scoring with a goal from senior attacker Matt Knott at 6:33 of the first period.  An unsettled situation ended up with the ball in fellow senior attacker ‘Dozer Williams’ stick, which he took to the rack, drew several defenders, and dished off to Knott for the first goal of the evening.  Not even two minutes later, it was Williams this time picking up the ball down low and driving hard to the cage, putting the ball past the Orange goalie for the quick 2-0 lead.  Webb’s defense would hold steady and allow the clock to wind down with a first quarter shutout and 2-0 lead going into the second stanza.

The Warriors started the second period scoring early again.  This time it was junior midfielder Matt Roach who got the ball.  After working the ball around, Roach would take the ball from the top of the box, step in a few feet and unwind, getting the 3rd goal of the night.  Webb got another goal 3 minutes later from Williams, his second of the night, before Orange would beat the stifling Webb defense as attacker Shawn Roberts would get the ball past sophomore goalie Christian Tilley to make the lead 4-1.  Two more goals scored, both by Knott and both assisted by Williams, would propel the Warriors lead to 6-1, before the Panthers got a freakish bounce shot past Tilley from Dylan Nicholas while serving a penalty at 22.3 seconds left in the quarter, ending the first half with the Black and Red leading Orange 6-2.

The third quarter saw both defenses lock down, as the Warriors defense kept its game up and the Orange defense stepped its up.  Each team would trade goals, with Webb getting one at 3:49 from Williams, assisted by Knott, and the Panthers getting one from Roberts again at 2:43, before the time would expire with Webb winning still 7-3.

In the 4th quarter, Orange would provide a scare to Webb, getting two quick goals, one from Michael Fans and one from Roberts again,  his third and final of the night, cutting the lead to a dangerously close 7-5.  However, the Warriors defense would calm down and deny the Panthers anything for almost 7 minutes, while offensively the Warriors got another Landon Williams assisted Matt Knott goal just 40 seconds after Orange scored its second of the quarter before one of the biggest plays of the night occurred as defender Tyler Eller would pick a ball up on the defensive end, and take it the entire length of the field before rifling it low and away on Orange goalie Adam Mclean.  It was Eller’s first career goal, and gave the Warriors their final goal of the night and a comfortable 9-5 lead.  Orange would get one more goal on a man down play, this one from midfielder Thomas Johnson, but it was too little too late as time expired with the Warriors coming out on top 9-6.

Matt Knott lead all goal scorers with 4 goals (he also had one assist0, setting a new school single game goals record.  Landon Williams got a hat trick and added 4 assists of his own, setting a new school single game points record in the process.  Defensively, sophomore Rufus Terry had 6 ground balls and a caused turnover, Holden Jones added 5 ground balls and a caused turnover, and Zach Barnes had 3 ground balls and a caused turnover.  Christian Tilley, coming off a school record setting performance against Riverside where he got 27 saves, made 17 tonight, getting his 300th career save in the process.  Larry Hester won 8 face-offs for the Warriors.

In the JV game, Orange would get the victory 14-1 over Webb.  The Warriors got a goal from Brian Lewis and 12 saves from sophomore Reggie Campos.  Webb hits the field again tomorrow night against Roxboro Community at home, while Orange hosts Northern Durham tomorrow, a conference opponent Webb faces away on Friday.  The Warriors move up to 1-5 on the season while Orange drops to 2-5 (1-2).

Warriors Defense Stands Tall in 12-1 Loss to Riverside

Despite the score, the Webb Warriors defense played one of the best games in school history and held 17 point favorite Durham Riverside to 6 goals under, but none the less falling 12-1 Thursday night at Warrior Field.  It was the first conference meeting for both teams, as Riverside goes to 1-0 in conference, while Webb falls to 0-1.The scoring got off early for the Pirates, as senior attacker Brad Hinkle took a pass from fellow senior Carson Sterling and put it in for the first goal of the game at 10 minutes left in the first quarter.  The Pirates would get goals in the first quarter from seniors Peter Ratcliff and Scott Levine, while the Webb defense would allow only those 3 goals to close out the first quarter trailing 3-0.  The Riverside offense roared to life in the second quarter, though, as they would get 7 goals from several different players.  However, after the 4th goal of the game for the Pirates, senior attacker Landon Williams for Webb would pick a ball up in an unsettled situation and drive to the rack, dunking it in for the Warrior’s first and only goal of the night.  The first half would end with a 10-1 Riverside lead.

In the second half, it was the Webb defense that roared to life.  With the RHS first liners still in, the defense would slam the door shut on the Pirates and allow only 1 goal in each of the last two quarters (quarter 4 played against primarily Riverside reserves).  Defensively for the Warriors, the long pole trio of seniors Tyler Eller and Zach Barnes, and sophomore Holden Jones would help shut down the Pirates attackers, while defensive midfielders Will Huffaker, Cedric Spence, and Mack Lyon, and LSM Rufus Terry would make it very hard for the Pirates to get any offense goalie.  When the Pirates did manage a shot, goalie Christian Tilley was usually there to stop it.  After video review of the game, it was determined that Tilley made 27 saves, a new school record, breaking his old mark of 26 set last year against Wakefield.

Leading the Pirates in scoring was Lenoir Rhyne bound senior Carson Sterling (3 G 3 A), and Brad Hinkle (3 G), while defensively for the Warriors Eller grabbed 7 groundballs and caused 2 turnovers, and Holden Jones had 1 GB and caused a record tying 5 turnovers.  Rufus Terry, coming off a GB record setting game against Burlington Williams, grabbed 7 with 2 CTs.

The Warriors fall to 0-5  (0-1), while the Pirates improve to 5-0 (1-0) and are (at the time of this article) ranked an extremely impressive 5th in the state (laxpower rankings).  Webb next hits the field against Orange on Monday the 21st, while Riverside has a quick turnaround, hosting 2nd ranked Wilmington Hoggard at home tomorrow night at Riverside.

Warriors Lose Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

The Warriors traveled to Walter M. (Burlington) Williams High School Tuesday night and, after one of the hardest fought games in recent memory, fell to the home Bulldogs, 6 to 5, in double overtime.  Matt Knott lead the Warriors in scoring with 3 goals and an assist, while the Bulldogs got two goals each from Andrews and Housdrani (first names not available; Williams HS stats unofficial and incomplete until video review and will also have the overtime goal scorer as well). The game started off sloppy, as neither team was able to maintain a steady offensive possession after the first face-off.  Williams struck first at 9:29 of the first quarter as Housdrani would get the first of his two goals.  Less than 2 minutes later, Andrews would drop in his first goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead over the visiting Warriors.  Webb took a much needed time out after this, and afterwords the defense seemed to settle down.  The Warriors would get on the bored first, with sophomore LSM Rufus Terry taking the ball the length of the field before passing it off, only to cut to the crease to take a feed from junior midfielder Matt Roach to give the Black and Red their first goal and to cut the lead to 1.  The Bulldogs weren’t done scoring, though, getting a goal from Nix at 1:14 of the first quarter to end the first stanza with a 3-1 lead.

Webb’s defense faltered slightly at 9:40, allowing Housdrani to get his second goal of the night to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.  Webb fought and clawed back into the game, though, as the defense, lead by senior Zach Barnes, who caused 4 turnovers in the first half alone, Terry, grabbing a school record 13 ground balls on the night along with 4 caused turnovers of his own, and sophomore goalie Christian Tilley, who closed the first half with 10 saves and finished with 23 overall, would tighten up and give the Bulldogs nothing until 1:30 left in the 4th quarter, a 28:10 scoring drought for the Bulldogs.  As the defense held its ground, the offense came to life, getting two goals late in the first half from senior Matt Knott and a second goal from Terry, assisted by Knott, to cut the lead to 1 with 1:50 remaining in the half.  Time would expire for halftime with the score 4-3 Bulldogs.

The second half began and, for the first part at least, would have not much fanfare.  Neither team scored in the third quarter, as each goalie would step up big, with Tilley stopping 3 shots and Hillater, who finished with 10 saves, stopping 5 alone in that quarter to preserve shut-outs for their respective teams.  The fourth quarter began with a questionable illegal stick penalty on Williams, a 3 minute non releasable.  Webb would drive to the rack to draw  a second penalty to give them a two man advantage for the next minute.  The Warriors took advantage, getting a Landon Williams assisted goal from Knott at 11:42 of the 4th quarter to tie the score up.  Despite the man advantage, Webb was unable to muster much more offense, and Burlington would kill the rest of the penalty.  With 6 minutes and 56 seconds to go in the game, Knott would pick up a loose ball outside the Williams goal, and drive home, dunking the ball over Hillater for the 5-4 lead.  The Bulldogs never gave up though, getting a goal that bounced up and off Tilley’s shaft with 1:30 to go in the game to tie it up 5-5.

The Warriors began with the ball in overtime, having been victim of a Williams tripping penalty at the end of the 4th quarter, and would again be unable to take advantage.  Neither team would score in the first overtime.  In the second, after yet another questionable penalty call, this time against the Warriors, the Bulldogs would work the ball around and, with 2:12 to go in the period, rifle a shot home to give the home team the 6-5 double overtime victory.

Larry Hester won 12 of 15 face-offs on the evening, while the Warriors got defensive help also from Holden Jones (6 GB, 3 CT).  Barnes’ 5 caused turnovers ties Jones for the school record for CTs in a game, while Terry’s 13 ground balls break Landon Williams’ record set previously this season against Cedar Ridge.  Tilley’s 23 saves tonight are the most since the season finale of 2010, when he made 25 against Northern Durham.  The Bulldogs improve to 2-2, while Webb drops to 0-4 after a hard fought yet heartbreaking effort.  Burlington hits the field again Friday the 18th at Eastern Alamance, while Webb hosts its first conference game on Thursday the 17th against Durham Riverside at 7 pm (JV 5 pm).

Warriors Squander First Half Lead, Fall to Eastern Alamance

The Black and Red took a 3-2 lead into the locker room at the half, but costly penalties in the second half and poor ball control led to a 5 goal second half for the visiting Eagles, and ultimately led to the 7-4 defeat at Warrior Field Monday night (photos by Vanessa Lewis may be found here).Junior midfielder Matt Roach opened the game’s scoring unassisted in the first period with a hard dodge down the ally and a rocket into the cage at 4:01 for the 1-0 lead.  Eastern came back to tie it just two minutes later to take a 1-1 tie into the second period.

Eastern struck first in the second stanza, as Nathan Dunkerton, scorer of the first goal and ultimately the 2nd of what would be 6 for him, put one past goalie Christian Tilley for the 2-1 lead at 8:03.  The defense would hold their ground for the rest of the half, conceding nothing to the Eagles, while offensively Webb got goals from Matt Knott, who took a fast break pass from sophomore LSM Rufus Terry and rifled it home, and a second goal from a second ally dodge by Roach to take the 3-2 lead into the locker room.  Tilley stopped 9 shots in the first half on his way to 14 total for the game.

In the second half, though, things fell apart for the Warriors.  A pushing penalty would lead to the Eagles tying up the game 3-3 just 14 seconds into the second half.  After a scrum in the midfield just 40 seconds later, Eastern got its 4th goal of the night from Dunkerton for a quick 4-3 Eagles lead.  Matt Knott would score unassisted at 2:32 to make it a 4-4 tie going into the final period.

It was all Eastern in the 4th quarter, however, as the Eagles would get a 5th and 6th goal from Dunkerton and would get an additional goal from Jacob Lyach, a hard rocket into the bottom right corner of the cage from about 10 yards out.

Larry Hester finished winning 9 of 15 face-offs, while Eastern goalie Seth Williams made 10 saves.  Dunkterton finished with 6 goals, while Knott, Roach, and sophomore Garrett Yager all had 7 ground balls to lead the Warriors.  In addition, Holden Jones caused 3 turnovers to lead that category.

The Warriors fall to 0-3, while the Eagles move to 2-1 in their inaugural season.  Webb has 3 days off before traveling to conference opponent Durham Jordan on Friday, while Eastern next plays Southeast Guilford on the same day.

The JV team fell to visiting Heritage HS 9-2 earlier in the afternoon.  Sophomores Jon Greene and Mack Lyon each scored for the Warriors.

Knott Nets Two and Tilley Stops 16, but Warriors Fall 7-2

Despite a stellar performance in goal by Christian Tilley, an incredible second half in which the defense allowed just two goals and collected more than 20 ground balls (led by sophomore Rufus Terry with 7), and senior attacker Matt Knott leading the offense with 2 goals, the Warriors fell 7-2 to Orange High School at Orange on Friday night. The Panthers started the scoring a little over one minute into the game, as Johnson (no first names for Orange players available) would take a pass from an unsettled situation in the midfield and put the ball in the cage to take the 1-0 lead.

The panthers received two more goals before sophomore midfielder Garrett Yager, with time running out in the first period, would send a pass to Knott, who made a spectacular catch to snag the low fast ball and rip it home with 1 second left to give the Warriors their first goal of the night (a face-off was taken afterwords which does not appear in the stat book, as each player only had one second to win it).  The Panthers got two more goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 half time lead

In the second half, after their shaky start, the defense settled down and allowed just two goals, both man up and both from Johnson, while getting an unassisted goal in the third period from Knott which cut the lead to 6-3.  Goalie Christian Tilley made 9 saves in the second half, including several up close saves (one 5 hole robbery in particular) and finished the game with 16 total.  Defensively, sophomore LSM Rufus Terry had 7 groundballs and two caused turnovers, and the close defense trio of seniors Tyler Eller and Zach Barnes and sophomore Holden Jones combined for 14 groundballs.  On the night, the Warriors had 45 ground balls to Orange’s 31, and junior FOGO Larry Hester won 7 of the 12 face-offs in the game.  The Warriors fall to 0-2, while Orange improves to 1-1.  Webb next faces off against Eastern Alamance High School on Monday at 7 pm (JV game against Heritage before at 5 pm) while Orange travels to Northern Durham High School on Monday as well.

In the JV game, the Panthers won 15-3.  Sophomores Mack Lyon, Garrett Powell, and Dylan Lawson scored for the Warriors (in that order).

Warriors Fall 15-5 against Red Wolves

March 3, 2011 by nfarabee

The Webb High School lacrosse team opened its 2011 season with a disappointing loss to the Red Wolves of visiting Cedar Ridge High School.  The Black and Red fought hard all game, but the experience and depth of Cedar Ridge proved too much in the long run (game photos may be found here by Vanessa Lewis). The Red Wolves opened the scoring at 8:13 left in the first quarter as senior midfielder Isiah Davis would take the ball in and rocket a shot for the first goal of the game.  It didn’t take long for the Warriors to break even though, as ‘Dozer Williams took a feed from fellow senior attacker Matt Knott and buried a shot right over the stick of senior goalie Steve Tanner.  The Red Wolves would then go on a 4 goal run to pull away and make it 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, getting two goals from sophomore midfielder Rob Moore and one each from freshman middie Brandon Phrase and freshman attacker Jeff Williams (this excludes one goal disallowed for an illegal stick, the first of three such penalties on the night).

The second quarter was more evenly matched, as the Warriors would score two to Cedar Ridge’s three.  Senior attacker Matt Knott would net his first goal of the year and assist on William’s second and final goal as well, giving the senior captain one goal and two assists to finish his scoring on the night.  The Webb defense held the Red Wolves scoreless for the first 8 and a half minutes of the second quarter, before giving up 4 to end the first half with a score of 9-3.

The second half scoring opened quickly for Cedar Ridge, as the Red Wolves got goals from Williams and junior middie Mike Mastriani only 43 seconds apart.  The defense would settle down after that, holding the Wolves until the 4 minute mark, when sophomore attacker Zach Roby would get his second of two goals on the evening.  Webb wouldnt be shut out this quarter though as junior midfielder Matt Roach would rocket a shot from 15 yards off an assist from senior attacker Gibson Gillespie to give the Warriors their 4th goal on the evening.  In the fourth and final quarter, the Warriors would get a goal from sophomore LSM Rufus Terry, while the Wolves would get goals from Moore, Davis, and senior Brendan Rimmer.

Isiah Davis and Mike Mastriani lead all scorers with 4 points each (Davis: 3 G 1 A; Mastriani: 2 G 2 A), while Jeff Williams would add a hat trick himself.  For the Warriors, Knott lead the way with a goal and two assists, with Landon Williams getting two goals and Terry and Roach rounding out the scoring.  Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Holden Jones, causing his own school record tying 5 turnovers in the game, and sophomore goalie Christian Tilley, who made 11 saves, 9 in the first half alone.  His Red Wolves counterpart, Steve Tanner, would stop 12 on the night.  Dozer Williams lead the way with 11 ground balls on the evening, while Webb would win the ground ball battle 42 to 36.  The Red Wolves dominated at the face-off X, though, winning 16 of 24 face-offs.  Junior FOGO Larry Hester would lead Webb in that department, going 3 for 6 before giving way to senior Will Huffaker for the rest of the game.

For the JV team, the Wolves would prevail 12-4.  Webb sophomore midfielder Mack Lyon scored the first goal in Webb JV history, while sophomore attacker Dylan Lawson then picked up the first hat trick in team history to finish up the scoring.  Both teams are in action again tomorrow at Orange High School.  Game times are set for 5 and 7 pm.  Cedar Ridge next hits the field today against Eastern Guilford.
