Ian Update 6/29

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Jun. 29, 2010

With Terre and Marshall staying in Norfolk with Ian, Doug, Goldie, and Ian’s girlfriend, Brittany, drove from Norfolk to Columbus yesterday.  After their 9 ½ hour drive, a few of us stopped by the Burkhart homestead to visit with Doug and Goldie, and to welcome them back home.  It’s great to see them, and even more important, it was really great to see and hear how positive Doug’s attitude is, mostly as a result of the inspiration of Ian.  I can tell you it definitely rubs off on you…

So how’s Ian?

Doug’s initial response, with a great big smile, was “he’s doing GREAT!”   Doug shared with us all how incredibly proud  he and his entire family are of Ian, how strong he is, how positive he is, and how eager he is to move on with the next stage of the process.  And while the last few days have been a struggle with all the up and down emotions surrounding the upcoming transport to Shephard in Atlanta, there were some very positive signs about how it was all being handled.

Doug has been able to establish a very strong contact with a gentleman in the Insurance company that is both a doctor and a ‘businessman’.  This has allowed the family to better understand all the variables surrounding Ian’s transport and rehab program timing—and there really are a lot of factors that must be considered—the flight to Atlanta, Oxygen considerations if still on the vent, altitude affects, the infection, intensive care transport, and much more.  What is important to note is this:

"The Burkhart  family is getting much more comfortable with their direct involvement in making decisions that are in Ian’s best interest, most especially regarding how and when he is moved to Atlanta for rehab.  And the information and guidance that they are getting from those that are involved, at the Insurance company, the hospital, and at Shephard, is helping them map out a plan with the best timing for Ian. "

All involved believe that Ian will be in Atlanta at this time next week.  He continues to get stronger—and while he is still battling the fever, he will beat it.  Ian continues to exceed all expectations with his efforts to get off the vent.  He was off for 14 hours each of the last two days, and no matter how long the doctors and nurses ask him to try to go for, he beats it by an hour or more.  Not really a surprise, it’s Ian.

That’s about all for now—will pass on information as it becomes available.

Can’t wait to experience the same welcoming home of Ian as we were able to do with Doug and Goldie last night.

Don’t forget, and don’t let up

Be positive; Be encouraging;  Be there for Ian!
