6/16 10:30pm Update

It sounds like today was a day of ups and downs for Ian.  I had a chance to talk to Marshall for about 15 minutes this afternoon.  The biggest take-away from the conversation was that the outpouring of support for Ian and the family is really helping to keep their spirits up.  Throughout the day they read the text messages, emails and letters that everyone is sending to Ian and it really helps.

Marshall and I covered a lot of things so I’ll do my best to list the stuff that you may find informative:

-       Ian’s pain ranges from a 4 to a 7 throughout the day (nurses regularly ask you to rate your pain level)

-       One of the next steps is to see if he is able to cough.  If he can cough, they can move towards feeding him solid food.  If he can’t, no solid food b/c he could choke if it goes down the wrong tube

-       His arm movement was improved over yesterday with slightly more controlled movements, although this takes a lot out of him and he tires quickly

-       From a mental standpoint, he is still 100% Ian

-       He is already planning his new layout to the house- he wants to knock out some walls and build a new entrance to the downstairs, which will now become his lair.  He also has plans to install a heated ramp to his private apartment.

-       One of the big goals that they will work towards is to hopefully regain control of his arms so he can use a mouse for his computer.  As you may know, Ian is big into computers and the ability to still work online would be huge.

-       As I am writing this update I just received a message from Doug Burkhart that they really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers.  It looks like Ian slipped a bit tonight and they put him on a bipap to assist with breathing.

Hopefully many of you will be able to come by the school tomorrow to sign the card for Ian.
