Ian Update 6/14 10:30pm

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Jun. 14, 2010

This is an update from Steve Simonetti, Marshall & Terre Burkhart:

Steve:

Ian just got out of surgery—almost 9 hours total.  The doctors have indicated that they did all they could to remove bone fragments and fuse the two vertebrate.  There was a significant amount of damage that required a much  longer surgery than had originally been thought.

Ian will have a minimum of 7-10 days of recovery from the surgery which will include a significant amount of swelling from the extensive surgery.  He is paralyzed, but the extent of the paralysis will not be known until after the recovery period.  It will be a very long and difficult time for the Burkhart family, as they eagerly wait for results and deal with the reality of this incredibly difficult situation.

The Burkhart family is exhausted, although they continue to be so appreciative of the calls, texts, emails and prayers.  They are with Ian as I type this, and their focus will be singularly with him through this initial recovery period.  Doug has asked that we all please continue to pray for Ian and to please understand how difficult it will be over the next two weeks to respond to all of you as he would like.  Ian really needs his family now, and they need to be there for him, so please be patient and give them a little space and some time.

Please know that Doug and the family know how we all have them in our thoughts and prayers, and we can all be thankful that we are blessed with such wonderful and caring friends.  We will try to set up a Caring Bridge website to get updates as soon as the time is right for those that want to log in and send wishes to Ian—please keep the prayers coming.

Terre:

“just saw him again. Opened eyes & talked. Says already paying attention so he can get the heck out of here!  MOVED BOTH ARMS.. FLOPPED THEM UP AND DOWN.  NOT ON A VENT.  Monnie is allowed to stay all night in his room with him!

Marshall:

“Ian just got out of surgery.  Went well and the doctor said he may be able to use his arms again but walking is very doubtful.  Thanks for all of your support, thoughts, and prayers.  They’re much appreciated.”
