Eagles At The SELC Tournament

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Apr. 30, 2013

Alpharetta, GA – On Friday April 26th the Emory Eagles matched up against the Citadel Bulldogs in the first round of the SELC playoffs. The pace of the game was slow and controlled with both teams taking advantage of early opportunities , and the Eagles were only up by one goal at the end of the first half, 4-3. With Senior face-off man Robert Cooper and wing midfielder Sophomore Nick Cook, the Eagles were able to control the face-off X by winning 60%, which translated to more offensive possessions. In addition, the Eagles continued to grind down the Bulldogs’ defense with a variety of offensive sets and an offense led by midfielder Mike Embersit, and attackmen Ryan Douglas and Ed Kovel. The Eagles never trailed the Bulldogs and won the contest 8-6, advancing them to the SELC Semifinals.

John’s Creek, GA – After a short turn around from the previous night's game against the Citadel Bulldogs, on Saturday April 27th the Emory Eagles faced off against the Liberty Flames,  ranked 3rd in the nation in the MCLA II. The Flames were coming off a 21-17 win over Palm Beach Atlantic in which both teams demonstrated their offensive skill. However, the Eagles were able to execute their gameplan to control the pace of the game and slow down their opponent. At the end of the half, the Eagles were only down by 3 goals against Liberty, 6-3. During the third quarter, the defense led by Senior goalie Jon Silberman, sophomore defenseman Mason Nyhoff, and freshman defenseman Matthew Parker, held the Flames scoreless, and the offense controlled the possession to score two more goals, making the halftime score 5-6. In the last five minutes of the game, the Flames offense ignited and scored the final four goals to win the match 10-6. Despite the loss, Senior attackman Ed Kovel had an outstanding game with four goals and was named to the All-Tournament Team, and the Eagles held the Flames to the lowest goal total all season long.

As the SELC SW Divisional Champions and SELC Championship Semifinalists, the future for Emory Lacrosse looks bright.
