Fall 2012 Season Game Recaps

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Dec. 11, 2012

On September 29th, the Eagles took on Shorter College, a NCAA DII lacrosse program. With only a few weeks of practice under their belt, the Eagles played well against Shorter, but fell short in the goals category. In the end, Shorter ended up winning 13-7. Despite being disappointed in the final result, the team showed promise moving forward and developed cohesion in both the offensive and defensive units.

On the weekends of October 20th and November 3rd, the Eagles participated in the Skyhawk Shootout hosted by Point University. The Skyhawk Shootout attracted several programs including, among others, Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC), Savannah College of Art and Design, Emmanuel College, Reinhardt College, Piedmont College, and University of Georgia.

On October 20th, the Eagles faced off against the Lions of Piedmont College and the Point University Skyhawks.

Piedmont is a NCAA Division III lacrosse program. In an evenly matched contest, the two teams ended up tied throughout the game with neither team able to take control. Team captain Ed Kovel controlled the offense and scored three goals. Locked in a 4-4 tie for the waning minutes of the game, Piedmont found the back of the net within the last 30 seconds and ended up winning the match 5-4. The Eagles showed  that they will be a strong contender in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) this season with this effort against a NCAA DIII squad.

In the final game of the day, the Eagles played under the lights against Point University, the hosts of the tournament. Despite the Skyhawk’s athletic advantage, the Eagles clicked and netted several goals in the first half. The Eagles ended up earning a victory with the final tally 9-5.

On November 3rd, the Eagles faced off against the Emmanuel College Lions and the TWC Bulldogs, two Southeast Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Division rivals.

In the match against Emmanuel, the Eagles came out strong, netting 5 quick goals during the first half. The offensive unit showed the comfort they had developed within the system and played with each other well. Led by junior goalie Sterling Feeser , the defensive unit stymied the Lions, holding them scoreless through the first half. In second half, the Eagles found the back of the net two more times, but Emmanuel broke their drought and scored 3 goals. The Eagles came up with a resounding win, 7-3. The Eagles look forward to another test against the Lions during the regular season when they make the short trip up I-85 to the Emmanuel campus on Feb. 16th at 3pm.

The second match of the day against TWC illustrated the competitive nature of this rivalry with the Eagles and Bulldogs trading scores. Goizueta Business School MBA student Mike Embersit led the offense, netting 4 goals against the Bulldogs. With the official score at 7-7, the final whistle blewleaving the match in a tie. Clearly, both teams will be ready for a rematch this Spring on March 23 at 3pm when TWC comes to campus.
