Eagles Win SELC, Look Forward to DenverApr. 28, 2009 Last year, the Emory's hopes of a second-straight birth in the MCLA National Championships tournament were thwarted when they lost to the Elon Phoenix in the finals of the SELC Championship. The loss was especially heartbreaking because of the way in which Elon came back from a 5-1 deficit at the half and scored the game-winning goal with 2.6 seconds left to defeat Emory, 7-6. This year, the score and opponent were the same -- as was the dramatic nature in which the game ended -- but the victor in this case was Emory. Led all game by great play from senior goalie David Laub, Emory won the game in sudden-death overtime with a goal by freshman attackman Tom Higinbothom. The game was back-and-forth all game with no team holding more than a one-goal lead. With the victory in the bag, the Eagles earned an Automatic Qualifier for the MCLA National Championships in Denver, Colorado. They next two weeks will be busy with final exams, term papers, senior graduation, practice and conditioning all on the agenda.
