Tech Beats Emory by 4 on Senior DayApr. 1, 2007 ATLANTA, GA On a rainy Sunday afternoon Robert Nugent (River Forest, IL/St. Ignatius), William Sant (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade). Stephen Crump (Houston, TX/Lawrenceville), Andrew Dunn (Needham, MA/Needham), and Robert Stein (Pittsburgh, PA/Taylor Allredice) would all play their last game on the campus of Emory University. Before them and the rest of the Eagles stood crosstown rival, Georgia Tech, hot off a 13-7 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. The Yellow Jackets, who are currently ranked 24th in Division A proved to be a formidable opponent as they would defeat the Birds 10-6. Emory started off slow allowing Tech to score three unanswered goals right off the bat. Paul Goleb (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) would finally put the Eagles on the board with his ninth goal of the season. The first quarter would end with the Buzz up 5-2 with the second Emory goal coming from Adam Smith (Memphis, TN/White Station). Smith's goal came with the first of two assists on the day from defensive standout, Ryan Covert (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade). A hard riding effort resulted in Alex Leung (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) scoring his 17th goal on the year with a helper from Nugent. Unfortunately, that would be the only EU goal in the quarter while the Jackets manged to bury two. Despite an inspired seven save performance by Andy Dunn, the score at the half had Georgia Tech on top 7-3. Sant would score off of an assist from team assist leader, Jarrett Levy (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrews), but Tech would again have a two goal quarter making the score 9-4 going into the final quarter. In the fourth, goals came from Jeremy Jonas (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) and David Morrison (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich). Emory would win the quarter 2-1, but the final score would be left with GT up 10-6. David Laub (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) had a strong second half performance between the pipes, saving nine while only letting in three. The game was a clean one; the only penalty called over the course of the entire game was a 30 second offsides violation against Emory. Coach Reed commented that he was happy with the effort and performance of his team, but now stresses that his Eagles must now prepare for the conference playoffs on April 20th. Today's game was the first time Emory had taken on a Nationally Ranked A Division Program since January 29th, 2005; a 19-2 to the No. 21 Florida Gators. This is clearly a program who has made a lot of progress, and owes its senior class much gratitude this year. When they came here as freshman in 2003-2004 the thought of being a nationally ranked program was but a fantasy. Today, as seniors, it is very much a reality as the Eagles are looking to make an appearance at the national championships this May.
