Men's Lax Back on Track with Win Against State

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 25, 2007

ATLANTA, GA Coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Stonehill College was heartbreaking for Emory as it was their first loss off the season. "At least the white whale of a perfect season is now off are backs," commented Head Coach, Dave Reed. The 8th ranked Eagles would return to action after spring break against first year program, Georgia State.

The blazing hot afternoon contest at Georgia Tech's neutral facility would not be the first between the Eagles and the Panthers. GSU traveled to Emory this past November for a fall ball match-up in a game that would leave Emory only on top by two. Joe Taragowski's young squad has proved to be a ferocious one in their inaugural campaign as they look to officially join the SELC next season. In the meantime the Birds were out to re-find their winning ways with a convincing win over State. It was a hard fought battle in which Emory pulled away victorious 15-7.

Big numbers came from the midfield as David Morrison (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Curt Simmons (Wilmington, DE/Tantall) both had notable performances. Simmons ripped five into the back of the cage while tallying an assist. Morrison finished with two goals and a helper on the day as did former soccer player, Paul Goleb (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery). Also doing making his presence felt was Daniel Chertok (Roslyn, NY/Roslyn) who manged to tally both his first official goal and assist of his collegiate career against the Panthers. It had been noted by many of Chertok's teammates that his enthusiasm, effort, and all around good attitude has helped the team become a more positive unit as of late.

On the attack Alex Leung (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) added three goals with an assist, while Robert Nugent (River Forest, IL/St. Ignatius) would tally a goal and an assist as well. Nugent currently leads the team in goal scoring with 19 to his credit. Tied for second in the conference in assists, Jarrett Levy (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrews) and David Franklin (Jericho, NY/Jericho - Drew) each earned one more today as they now both currently stand with 13 on the year. Freshman, Adam Smith (Memphis, TN/White Station) scored his fifth goal of the year as he continues to be Emory's leading scorer among rookies; a title which Levy owned one year ago.

Both goalies split time in the cage, and a strong defensive performance was given despite the absence of Evan Cropper (New York, NY/Trinity) who was nursing a leg injury.

The last home game of the season is now a week away when none other then the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech will come to play in Woodruff stadium. Tech is currently ranked 24th in the nation's division A poll with a 5-3 record. It should prove to be a classic pre-playoff showcase between two of the state's finest programs. The fact that these two teams share the same city only adds to the heat of the rivalry. They have not met since the fall of 2005, a game in which Tech won solidly.
