The 2010 Junior Raider Lacrosse-athon

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Feb. 28, 2010

A big thank you to everyone who helped or participated in this years Junior Raider Lacrosse-athon. The Wounded Warrior Project was the beneficiary and a total of $2,752.00, was raised in the memory of Captain John Hallett, III, United States Army, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 6th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

This year the Alpharetta Junior Raider Men’s Lacrosse team chose to conduct a 12-hour “lacrosse-athon” as our charity event.  The Junior Raider Lacrosse team is comprised of local middle school aged lacrosse players and is structured as a feeder program for the Alpharetta High School Men’s Lacrosse Teams.  The players solicited donations from neighbors, friends and family after we decided to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).  We chose WWP not only because it is a very worthy program, but one of our players lost his cousin while he was serving in Afghanistan in 2009.

During the date of our lacrosse-athon, these young men, all 6th, 7th and 8th graders rose around 5AM for our 6AM start to the day.  They all persevered, playing lacrosse through every form of precipitation, rain, sleet and snow, which finally gave way to just plain old blustery and cold.  Nonetheless, they finished the 12-hours of lacrosse, playing from 6AM to 6PM.  We were very proud of them.

We had 22 boys collect donations and they raised a total of $2752! Shawn Finnerty raised the most at $417. There were three other boys who led the pack with donations; Morgan Craver at $320, Stephen Mayer at $300 and Jeromy Hiatt at $250. We had another 6 boys raise between $100 and $185 each!

All in all the Junior Raiders forwarded donations in the total of $2,752.00, in the memory of Captain John Hallett, III, United States Army, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 6th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. Captain Hallett was Killed in Action while serving in Afghanistan in 2009 and was the cousin of Cal Swanson, a member of our lacrosse team.
