ESPN RISE HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE | 2011 SEASON PREVIEW February 10, 2011
West includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington
California and Colorado appear to be frightful places to play for potential title contenders in 2011.
The depth in each of those states will make it difficult for any one team to reach a title game without a few blemishes on their record.

Sizing Up The Region CALIFORNIA: Amador Valley (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished as North Coast Section runners-up last season and returns All-EBAL first-team midfielder Jessica Daut. Defender Marissa Pereira leads a defense that allowed double-digit goals only nine times last season and helped the team win seven of its last eight games. Coronado (Coronado, Calif.) returns Michaela Guerrera, Caitlin Couture and Alex Reidy from a team that finished 21-3 last season and lost to Torrey Pines by just one goal in the San Diego Section championship. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) returns eight starters from last year’s 13-9 team. The Mavericks won the San Diego Section championship from 2007 to 2009. Jackie Mills, a San Diego State commit, leads the attack along with junior Caitlin Zirpolo and sophomore Kyleigh Westgarth. Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) is riding the second-longest winning streak in the nation at 40 games. The Griffins have not lost since May 7, 2008, but will have a new head coach this season. The Griffins return All-Sunset first-team member Julie Crowell who earned the honor as a freshman last season. Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.) head coach Dearborn Ramos said expectations are high for the defending two-time NCS champions. The Mustangs return six starters from a team that finished 23-0 last season. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) dipped to 11-10 last year after finishing 17-4 in 2009, but with five starters and nine players returning, the Trojans should be able to improve. Four of Oak Ridge’s losses last season were by one goal. Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) won the San Diego Section last season and return San Diego CIF Player of the Year Anna Knowles along with Duke commitment Katie Trees. The Falcons also return All-CIF first-team members Caroline Boucher (midfield), and goalie Carrie Yang.
