CAL wins District | KCD Recap | 5-9-13May. 11, 2013 On Thursday, 5/9/13, CAL hosted KCD to play for the District Championship. CAL started off with good, patient possessions but was unable to convert several good opportunities into scores. Halfway through the first quarter, the Centurions found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 score. After a CAL goal by Chad Lewellyn, Joe Zieser hit Andrew Frey for their second goal to tie the game. Mark Highbaugh found the back of the net after receiving a great interior pass from Lewellyn to put CAL up 3-2 as the first quarter ended. The second quarter saw CAL clicking into gear. Ben “Burbs” Burchell fired in two goals on assists from both Chad and Cal Lewellyn to build a 5-3 lead for CAL. KCD found a small crack in the tough Centurion defense for a score. CAL responded on the very next possession when Zieser scored off of an assist from Trent Erps. As the quarter wound down, CAL kept their “pedal to the metal!” Burchell scored an unassisted goal after he made an awesome defensive steal at the KCD end. Highbaugh scored again, this time off a pass from Frey. Preston Gilbert then hit a shot with 0:24 on the clock. CAL went into the halftime break with a hard earned 9-4 lead. In the third, the team continued to execute at a very high level. Highbaugh found an open Burchell for another goal, his team-high fourth of the game. The quarter closed out with Frey scoring again and CAL up by a score of 11-5. In the final quarter, CAL netted two more goals from Frey and then Highbaugh, who each had 3 goal “hat tricks” for the game. The final score was 13-6 and CAL Lacrosse was crowned as 213 District Champions! After the game three CAL players were named to the All-District team; Ben Burchell, Trent Erps and Andrew Frey. On Monday, at 7:00pm, CAL will host Ballard in the quarter round of the State Tournament. Be sure to come on out and cheer for your team!
