Alumni Win in Close GameOct. 24, 2009 The Baylor Alumni came out to play. The game was structured like a typical lacrosse game: four quarters and a half time—but the quarters were shortened to accommodate for the Baylor Football game that afternoon. The first quarter opened up with the alumni striking first on an outside shot from Kyle Kulda. But soon after, the new look Bears answered right back. Each team took racked up a point each to tie the game at 2 after one quarter. The defense for each team was superb; defensemen from each side were able to clear the ball after saves by Matthew McPheeters and new goal keeper Ross Morgan (for the current bears) and Eric Engelsgjerd (of the Alumni). But each offense was able to sneak in a goal before the half. At the start of the 3rd quarter the alumni continued their dominance on face-offs behind Dan Cline. Adam Little and Chris Jones lead the attack for the alumni, which found the back of the net once more. The young Bears were also able to find the goal behind some fancy dogging by rookie Mike Tawil. Finally, with the game tied 4-4 and a trophy and bragging rights on the line, each side looked determined to finish strong. The alumni came out with the pedal to metal scoring first, but on an unsettled situation sophomore Michael Goldstein found himself one on one with the goalie—as he faked the goalie high he shot low, but alumni Matthew Pompa stuck his defense stick in for the save and was able to clear the ball. The save proved invaluable as the alumni found the back of the net for a second time in the quarter. The Bears countered with another timely goal to keep the game close, and after a turnover by the alumni the Bears used their final time-out with 10 seconds left and the ball at ‘X.’ Daniel Goldstein ran the ball from X, but the defense proved too much and the alumni were able to hold on for the 6-5 win. We like to thank all the Alumni who came out, and check back as we add those who attened the 1st Annual Baylor Lacrosse Alumni Game.
