Baylor vs. Oklahoma

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Feb. 21, 2008

The Baylor Bears secured their first conference victory Sunday against Oklahoma. The Bear not only battled the Sooners but the poor field conditions caused by this weekend’s thunderstorm. The team got out to an early lead in the mud with outstanding play from Midfielder Andrew Brochu and attack man Luke Whyte yet were faced with adversity as penalties and heads up play by the Sooners narrowed the lead early in the second quarter. It would be the Bears though that would gain momentum going into halftime with a clutch last minute goal from freshman Ben Kessler. While the Sooners managed to grab a brief lead in the early third quarter the defense lead by Josh Brown, Preston Benditz, and Lucas Rodriquez managed to choke off the Sooners offense with key takeaways and groundballs. The offense capitalized on the team’s ball control with a streak of goals from Chris Jones and the powerful left handed shooting of Michael Magee. Freshman Gideon Powell sealed the outcome of the game by standing in front of a shot and taking the ball all the way across the  torn up field for an assisted goal. The Bears won a solid 15-9 victory for their first conference win and look forward to facing Conference rival SMU in Dallas next weekend.
